"FDA-cleared" gets used a lot in LED mask marketing, but the label alone doesn't tell you everything you need to know before buying. Here's a practical checklist for evaluating any FDA-cleared LED mask, whichever brand you're considering.
Confirm what "FDA-cleared" actually covers
FDA clearance means a device has gone through the agency's regulatory pathway for a specific intended use, most commonly wrinkles, and that it's been found substantially similar to already-cleared devices in safety and function. It's a real, meaningful signal, but it's specific to whatever the clearance actually covers, not a blanket endorsement of every claim a brand makes about the product.
Look for a real clearance number
A legitimate FDA-cleared device should have a 510(k) clearance number you can look up. Brands that are confident in their clearance typically list it directly on their site or packaging. If a brand claims clearance but won't provide the number, or the number doesn't correspond to the product when searched, that's a real red flag worth taking seriously.
Check the wavelengths, specifically
A mask should clearly state which wavelengths it uses and why, not just a vague "clinically proven light" claim. Red light in the mid-600 nanometer range is commonly associated with surface-level skin concerns, while near-infrared in the 800 to 1000+ nanometer range is associated with deeper tissue support. If a product page can't tell you its specific wavelengths, that's usually a sign of a lower-quality or less transparent listing.
Understand the diode count in context
LED or laser diode count gets marketed heavily, but a higher number alone doesn't guarantee better results. What matters more is the combination of diode count, power output at the skin's surface, and even coverage across the treatment area. A mask with fewer, well-placed, higher-output diodes can outperform one with more diodes at lower power.
Look for real fit and comfort information
A mask that doesn't sit close and evenly against the skin loses effectiveness in the gaps, regardless of its specs on paper. Look for information about adjustability, materials, and weight, and be skeptical of masks with no detail beyond marketing photography.
Watch for red flags in claims
Be cautious of masks promising results in days rather than weeks, using the phrase "FDA approved" instead of the accurate "FDA-cleared," or citing large study numbers without any way to verify the source. Legitimate brands are typically precise about what their clearance does and doesn't cover.

FDA clearance is a real and useful signal, but it's a starting point for research, not a substitute for it. A verifiable clearance number, specific documented wavelengths, and realistic, precisely worded claims are what separate a credible mask from one just borrowing the language.
